AML M1 FAB: Acute myeloblastic leukaemia (immature) - case report 3

Sort of case report: In clinical view
Medical history: The patient presented was transferred to our clinic for further diagnostic testing for an acute leukemia. The patient had a fever of one week duration.
Laboratory results:
A complete blood count (CBC) was ordered and it was found that the patient was anemic, thrombocytopenic and had a leukocytosis of 200 /nl. The peripheral blood differential showed 97% blasts. A bone marrow specimen was collected and the accompanying CBC results are below.

Diagnosis: Acute myeloid leukemia of the M1 subtype
Comment on this case: The findings are consistent with an acute myeloid leukemia without HLA-DR expression, which can be associated with a translocation of genes 15 and 17. It is recommended that a correlation with cytogenetics be performed.
