Immunophenotyping: Immunophenotyping was performed on a peripheral blood specimen. The mononuclearn cell populations were well defined in the forward and side scatter areas. An electronic gate around cellular populations with typical scattered light characteristics revealed a lymphocytoid population of 3.6%, a significantly increased monocytoid population of 94 % and a granulocytoid population comprising 2.5% of the sample cells. Evaluation of the lymphoblastoid gate showed a population with the following phenotype: CD13low / CD33+ / CD11b+ / CD15+ / CD5+ / HLR-DR+ / CD56+ / CD117+ / CD7.1+.
Comment on this image collection: Immunophenotyping is consistent with an acute myeloid leukemia of the M5 subtype with a MLL gene arrangement.
Differential diagnosis: Acute myeloid leukemia of the M5a subtype
